Gr.A.C.E. – Memories of a Shaded Past is a project of Mostar Friedensprojekt e.V., Gesamteuropäisches Studienwerk in Vlotho and EUphoria from Thessaloniki. It will take place from 16.- 24. March 2019 in Berlin, Vlotho and Weimar. There the participants will deal with the topics of how to organize more and better youth exchanges on Greek and German history and with our way of remembrance and commemoration. It asks: Where do our experiences converge, where can we share lessons learnt? 

Under the framework of Gr.A.C.E – Greek-German Matchmaking for Active Citizenship Education in Youth Work Mostar Friedensprojekt e.V. organizes a no-frills road trip through Germany with the title „Memories of a Shaded Past“. For seven days we will be on the traces of German remembrance culture. Our partners are Gesamteuropäisches Studienwerk (GESW) Vlotho, and EUphoria Youth Lab, Thessaloniki.

Road trip in cities and areas linked to WW2
We will visit different locations in Berlin, meet with initiatives of Greek cultural work. We travel to Vlotho to study in details remembrance work in a small historic town of Westfalia and visit the former fortress of the ordre of the SS in Wewelsburg. We go to Weimar to meet with initiatives and also learn about the new museum of the Weimar Republic. Back in Berlin we will visit Potsdam, Sachsenhausen and prepare ourselves for our second event in Thessaloniki that will take place in June 2019. There, the focus will be the history of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki through meetings and visits to remembrance venues.

The group will consist 12 people aged 18+ from Germany and Greece. Accomodation will be in hostels and local transportation by mini-van. Working languages: German / Greek with interpretation. Covered: 100% travel expenses, food and accomodation.

The project “memories of a shaded past” is a follow-up project of youth workers that participated in the seminars Greek German matchmaking for Active Citizenship Education in Youth Work (G.R.A.C.E.) of the Arbeitskreis deutscher Bildungsstätten (AdB) in April 2018 in Berlin and in October/November 2018 in Korinthos and Athens. During that seminar representatives of German and Greek NGOs were introduced and introduced each other to several topics in political youth education and related fields of work. It served as an entry point into the respective technical discussions in both countries and concentrated on the development of bridges for the connection of the respective work contexts in terms of Human Rights Education, Access to Young People to Social Rights etc
